Island Of Lost Souls
A shipwrecked Edward Parker is thankful to be alive when he’s pulled out of the sea onto the Apia which is headed to a mysterious island along with its equally questionable cargo. But when Edward is left on the island with his host, Dr. Moreau, he soon discovers a more sinister side of the island’s inhabitants and the mad doctor behind it. Here are a few movie mistakes to looks for in “Island of Lost Souls”.
· After seeing the list of missing crew members, ruth walks back to the Continental Hotel. She sits at a table with her handbag in her left hand, near her lap. A moment later, someone calls her name, and the handbag is on her lap, with her left hand near her face.
· M’Ling walks onto the ship’s deck, carrying a bucket with “slop for the dogs”. The captain stops him on the deck and is talking to him. The captain draws his hand back and M’Ling accidently spills some of the bucket’s contents on the deck. He’s still holding the bucket in the close-up, but, when the captain punches him a moment later, the bucket is a couple feet away and M’Ling falls next to it.
· Dr. Moreau is talking at the dinner table when Edward and Montgomery are first back at the island. There is no cup or saucer in front of Dr. Moreau when he talks about the brandy, but when he tells M’Ling he can “take everything”, a cup and saucer are now on the table next to his left arm. It’s moved again when Dr. Moreau gets up to leave.
· Dr. Moreau pours Donahue a drink when he arrives on the island with Ruth. Dr. Moreau offers Edward a drink which he declines. From the rear view, Dr. Moreau is pouring the drink while holding the bottle in his right hand, the bottle’s top in his left hand and the glass is on the tray on the table. It cuts to a front view when he asks Edward if he’s “being rash” and Dr. Moreau is now holding the glass in his left hand.
“Island of Lost Souls” (1932) stars Charles Laughton, Bela Lugosi, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams, Kathleen Burke, Arthur Hohl and Stanley Fields. It runs 70 minutes and is rated “Passed”.
